Reflection1 from Currey

I (Currey) am working with a group of teenage guys on studying homelessness and poverty in Atlanta, GA. We broke up into committees to take charge of different parts of the project and chose a project leader from the group.

We volunteered at the Odyssey III homeless shelter for MLK day and I think this day of service inspired the guys to choose to work with the homeless for their service project. I (Currey) am volunteering through AmeriCorps with these guys and we had to choose a service learning project. I was so excited that the guys wanted to help the community in such an important and interesting manner.

Most of these reflection posts will be posted by the person who volunteered to be the Organizer for this service project on homelessness. He will report what we have done and how we feel about what we've done so far. I might interject sometimes, but I'll be sure to say it's me and not our Organizer.

Currey,

It's great that you are going to blog about your experience of volunteering at a homeless shelter.

Is the shelter very large? Are there more families or single men and women?

I'm interested in knowing how the children feel who are staying there. It must be hard for them.

I would hate not having my privacy if I had to be in a shelter. And I know it can happen to anyone.

What do you think is the worst thing about it?
Thanks,
Barb Wwire

Well, Barb,
So far we have volunteered at the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Odyssey III, and Cafe 458. Odyssey III has a shelter mostly for men, a kitchen, and programs to encourage and help homeless people get back on their feet.

We volunteered recently at Cafe 458 which feeds both men and women who are working to better themselves by being in treatment for addictions or working on getting jobs and finding permanent places to live.

I will ask the students your questions and have them post again tomorrow. Thanks for your input!
